Duke Kahanamoku Long Distance Race

I stumbled upon this event as I went to the beach for some morning coffee! I had no idea it was happening this weekend but what great luck to be able watch all the paddlers get the canoes ready for the start of the race. They begin at Kailua Beach Park and finish in Waikiki! Awesome colors of the boats and all the different club shirts with the beautiful ocean as a backdrop made for a party for the eyes!

The first Duke Kahanamoku Long Distance Canoe race was held on August 24, 1968 in honor of the late Duke Kahanamoku.

You can read more about it at the Lanikai Canoe Club’s (which sponsors this event) website: https://lanikaicanoeclub.org/paddling-racing/duke-race

For more info about this and other races, canoe and paddling events this is the Oahu Hawaiian Racing Association website:

Lots of pics below, and at the very bottom, video of the start of the race!
